Neuromodulators
Neuromodulators are medicines like Botox and Xeomin® which are used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily relax the muscles that cause moderate to severe wrinkling. Most commonly they are used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles in adults. They are also used for a number of other medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), TMJ, migraines, and severe muscle spasms. The injectable contains a purified protein that relaxes the small muscles that cause excessive contraction leading to wrinkles and other conditions.

Muscle relaxation is gradual, usually starting 24-48 hours after treatment. Most people report results at 3-5 days, however it can take a full 14 days in some cases.
Longevity is determined by metabolism and the dose administered. Neuromodulators last 2-5 months and gradually wear off.
Follow the 4 hour rule: avoid the following for 4 hours…laying down, massaging the area treated (no facials right after!), and avoid blood thinning medications or substances (excessive alcohol). Makeup can be applied right after to conceal any redness or potential bruising, but a light touch is necessary to not displace or move the neuromodulator to nearby muscles.
Once you start having the ability to contract the troublesome muscles again, it’s best to schedule your next Botox or Xeomin® session of injections. The second treatment will typically last longer if administered before your wrinkles return to their full original state. It is normal for the treatment to start softening after about 2-3 months. We recommend scheduling your Botox appointments about 3 months apart.
If you are pregnant or nursing, have a neuromuscular disease, allergic to any of the ingredients, or you are taking certain antibiotics you should not have neurotoxin injections.
Side effects most commonly reported by patients include mild puffiness or bruising at the injection site (common), headache (13%), temporary eyelid droop (3%). Bruising risks can be minimized by avoiding aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, vitamin E, and high doses of fish oil for one week prior to injections.
